The 7 Masks People Wear & How To See Through Them

"Everyone who ever hurt me in business was wearing a mask. The problem was — I didn't know how to see through it."
I've been a founder long enough to have been betrayed by partners, copied by collaborators, drained by people I mentored and misled by those I trusted most. For years I thought it was bad luck. Then I realised — it wasn't luck. It was my inability to read people accurately. That realisation changed everything for me. And today I want to share what I've learned — so you never have to bleed the way I did.
"In 2023 I trusted a person who attended every single one of my events, spoke my vision better than I did — and quietly copied my entire model and disappeared. That was the day I started studying human psychology seriously."
"Every person who walks into your world is wearing a mask. Some wear it out of fear. Some out of habit. And some — with deliberate calculation."
As a founder, you will meet hundreds of people — co-founders, investors, team members, mentors, clients, collaborators. And you cannot afford to misread them. One wrong trust costs you time, money, energy and sometimes your entire mission.
Today I'm sharing The 7 Masks People Wear — and the exact cracks that reveal who they truly are underneath.
1: The Passionate Pretender
They show up with energy, excitement and perfect alignment with your vision. They attend every event. They comment on every post. They speak your language fluently.
Underneath: They want access. To your network, your credibility, your platform. Once they get it — the passion quietly disappears.
The Crack That Reveals Them
Watch what they do when there is nothing left to gain in the short term. Genuine passion stays consistent. Performed passion fades the moment the immediate benefit is received.
2: The Humble Manipulator
"I'm just a small founder trying to learn. I need your guidance." They make you feel like the expert, the saviour — the one who can help them. And if you're a natural helper like me — this one hits hardest.
Underneath: They have studied you. They know your helper instinct and they are activating it deliberately.
The Crack That Reveals Them
Genuine humility comes with gratitude and reciprocity over time. The Humble Manipulator only shows vulnerability when they need something — and becomes strangely unavailable when you need something from them.
3: The Vision Thief
"Your idea is incredible. Let's build this together." They go deep into your plans, ask detailed questions and seem genuinely aligned with your vision.
Underneath: They are downloading your ideas, your frameworks, your strategies — and planning to execute them independently.
The Crack That Reveals Them
They ask more questions than they contribute answers. They are more interested in how you're doing something than in actually doing it with you. And they disappear right before commitment is required.
4: The Loyalist Actor
"I'm with you no matter what." They speak highly of you publicly and position themselves as your most trusted inner circle member.
Underneath: They are building their own credibility through your name and platform. Every time they say "I work closely with [you]" — they are borrowing your authority.
The Crack That Reveals Them
Watch how they speak about you when you are not in the room. The Loyalist Actor cannot maintain the performance consistently in your absence. Someone will eventually tell you something that doesn't match the face they show you.
5: The Investor Illusion
"I love what you're building. Let's explore this further." They use investment language, ask for decks and numbers, and make you feel like funding is close.
Underneath: They enjoy the feeling of being seen as an investor — or they are extracting maximum information before walking away entirely.
The Crack That Reveals Them
Genuine investors move with timelines and next steps. The Investor Illusion keeps the conversation alive indefinitely — always one more meeting, one more question, one more introduction away from a commitment that never comes.
6: The Wounded Victim
They share a painful story of how they've been wronged — by previous partners, investors, the system. And if you've struggled yourself, this activates your deepest empathy.
Underneath: Their wound is their most powerful tool. They use it to bypass your filters and access your generosity — without any intention of reciprocating.
The Crack That Reveals Them
Genuine wounded people heal progressively when given real support. The mask wearer's wound never heals — because a healed wound loses its power over you. They need to stay wounded to keep accessing your help.
7: The Strategic Flatterer
"You are the most visionary person I've met. What you're building is unlike anything in India." They make you feel seen, validated and special.
Underneath: Flattery is the oldest manipulation tool in human history. They have identified your need to be recognised — and they are feeding it deliberately.
The Crack That Reveals Them
Notice whether the flattery comes before or after they ask for something. Genuine admiration is consistent and specific. Strategic flattery is perfectly timed to soften you before a request — and disappears once it's fulfilled or denied.
The Master Key
Across all 7 masks — one principle protects you every time. Watch behaviour over time. Not words in the moment. Every mask eventually cracks — because maintaining a performance is exhausting. People always reveal themselves through patterns, not incidents. One meeting tells you nothing. Three months tells you everything.
Your 4-Point Protection Framework
1: Time reveals everything. Never make major decisions about people in the first meeting. Let time do the work.
2: Watch behaviour not words. What people do consistently is who they are. What they say occasionally is who they want you to think they are.
3: Test before you trust. Small asks. Reciprocity checks. Commitment ladders. These are not cynicism — they are wisdom.
4: Manage distance silently. You never need to dramatically cut people off. Simply — quietly — reduce access, information and energy. Most mask wearers move on when the yield decreases.
I've met all 7 of these people in my journey. Every single one. And each one taught me something irreplaceable about human nature — and about myself. The goal is never to become cold or closed. The goal is to become warm from a distance, sharp up close, and generous only after trust is earned. That combination makes you magnetic to the right people — and invisible to the wrong ones. That is The Founder Within.
